View Full Version : rebuilding a V20 with my dad

on and off for the last 2 years I have been rebuilding a V20 that I gave to my dad. when he first saw my boat he lit up. He told me that he always wanted on of these boats. I just so happened to be sitting on two extra hulls. So I gave him one for fathers day. He had just recently retired and I figured it would keep him busy. The boat needed a transom and a floor. I warned him of the anount of work it needed. He was ok with it. So I told him that he would have to strip the hull so we can seperate the deck from the hull. "no problem" he said. and after a few weeks it was stripped. I then got the two halfs apart. I left the hull at work and took the deck to his back yard. Last winter we replaced the transom and cut out all the rotten bulkheads. Over the summer we replaced all the rotten wood in the floor. This last month while I was laid off we finished the bulkheads and bilge drainage, mounted the new gas tank and got the long lost two halfs back together. There is still a long way to go. The boat has an ugly helm. It doesn't seem to bother my dad but I know it could look better. But I didn't want to make any more extra work for myself. But after talking with a wise man from Spartenburg I decided to go for it. Here are some pics.

You were right Ozzie. I spent the whole ride home thinking about what you said. He did do a thing or two for me over the years. Thank you for putting things into the proper perspective for me. More pics to come as I progress.

Damnit, Man!!...is there no limit to your skills???...wish I could have been apprentice to you on your dad's V just to learn the art of "GLASSING" IMO you're eliminating all the sore spots of that hull and replacing w/REEL improvements...I'm really glad to have been a part of your thinking on the way home...and you sure didn't waste any time putting your thoughts into action!!...you musta whacked that puppy soon as you got outta the truck!!...
And there's one other thing I said I don't mind admitting to being right about...you ARE the REAL DEAL...

looks great, capt pete. looks like your dad might have started a second career. i also have not been a fan of the helm section on mine. i have always wanted to cut it flush with the rest of the dash. i know when these boats were built, they never would believe the electronics we have on these hulls. i have to mount mine on the passenger side.

I don't know how much I will be doing to this in the next few weeks. Kinda busy packing and stuff. Hopefully moving on March 15.

The boat is currently in my shop at work. That's where I have been doing all the work. It's got to come out tomorrow. I have real work to do now that I'm not laid off any more. So it will be heading to the warehouse till it warms up enough to work on it outside. I will keep the helm in my shop and tinker with that till I get it just right. I will pm you my address.

Well I got the boat out of the shop today. There was just enough space in our warehouse to fit it in.

oh yeah. That's the beauty of being in charge of putting the boats in there. I make sure I have enough room for my stuff. See that trailer my dad's boat is on? We almost never use it because of it's size. My boss is making me a deal so I can dedicate it for my boat. It fits perfect. Being 1 axle it will cut down the toll prices in half next time we head south with it.

that's exactly right. the first 30 or so boats are the toughest ones to get out. I wish they came out as easy as they go in.

OK so it's been a while since I've updated this thread. Last winter kinda got screwed up thanks to Sandy. So nothing really got done to the boat. This winter I was Hell bent to get 'er done. I finished filling and fairing everything on the topsides. Shot everything in primer. More sanding, then shot 3 coats of Awlgrip. It was the first time shooting paint this large. It looks pretty good. A few sags that can be wet sanded later but not bad. Then I laid down some Interdeck down on the deck and foredeck.

So we were going to use the motor from my Dad's old boat for the new one. But my dad found an ad in the Boat Shopper for a new 150 Optimax for $8995 down in DE (no sales tax) So after a short road trip the v20 had a shiny new motor.

The boat is almost complete. It still needs an enclosure and some wiring. But we couldn't resist the urge to go for a ride. So I wired up a bilge pump, put some gas and oil in it and dropped it in the water. I was suprised with the punch the 150 Opti provided. My Dad was smiling from ear to ear. He wouldn't let go of the wheel except when he let me back it back into the haul out pit.

Thanks. The wheel came off a Triton. We used to be a dealer for them and they were often removed for a different style wheel. So we have a pile of them laying around.
Thanks everyone for the kind words. It has been a long time since I started this project and I sure am glad it is just about done. Early March the wrap comes off so an enclosure can be made. Then the final wiring, passenger seating and anything else that needs finishing touches. Spring can't come quick enough.

Nice work! Did you sea trial with the engine at that height? How was the performance. Also how high did you mount the 225 on your v?
I'm asking b/c I haven't run my v20 ever and was wondering if they like being a little higher on the transom than the standard cavitation plate height before I mount an engine for the first time. Thanks
captpete13
02-05-2014, 07:15 PM
Thanks guys.
Vic, I used two coats on Interdeck by Interlux.
Keith, We sea trialed the boat as you see it. It ran better than I expected. I used a Merc Enertia prop. I have my motor mounted one hole shy of all the way up. No problems with cavitation. The Rev 4 prop holds water like a champ.
