I rarely (maybe twice a year) miss Church to fish, but the wife and I were kidless this weekend because they are on vacation with there "pawpaw". With that in mind I offered to take her to the beach for a couple hours Sunday. I decided to do a little whiting fishing and try to bring a few home to fry. I stopped and got some fresh dead shrimp on the way and we got there about 11AM.
I got lines in the water and immediately I knew the bite would be on. I landed a few keepers and then noticed a little boy (about 8 or 10 years old) playing just a few yards down the beach from me with an older lady I presumed to be his grandmother. I landed a little blacktip about 16" long and thought he may like to see it. I walked down and asked the lady if it was ok for him to see it and she eagerly offered her blessing. The little boy , Jacob loved the shark and even held it for his grandmother's camera and a photo opp. We released the shark and I went back to fishing. Not long after my rod bent over with another scrappy whiting and as I set the hook I yelled at Jacob to come over and fight the behemoth. He RAN down the beach and took my rod and handled it like a young pro. For the next couple hours I had me a friend. He and I caught fish together (mostly him as I did lots of baiting and casting ;D ) and became good buddys. Jacob and I fished and had a good time and I talked with his grandmother on and off. They were from MS and were down on vacation. She informed me that he wanted to fish really bad but they didn't bring any gear. She thanked me over and over but I let her know the pleasure was all mine. 8)
The little kid made my day. :)
Here is little Jacob with a stud Dauphin Island whiting. 8)

Here is the final tally...15 whiting and 2 specks.

If you look at the biggest one (middle row, top) that was the ONE fish my wife reeled in because I was busy with another rod and he was of course the biggest. Every time that girl touches a rod she get the biggest fish of the season. ::)
He went 1.32 which is a nice, fat lil whting for sure. 8)
I'm glad I missed church...I think it was for a good reason. ;)
