Three weeks ago when we returned from the beach I went to my dog Hershey's lot to let her out. Like most dogs, she's always so happy to see us. Brother in law fed and watered her the two days we were gone. Anyway, when I went to let her out I realized she wasn't able to stand or move her back legs at all and appeared to be in pain. We ended up taking her to the emergency vet clinic in Thomasville where they said she had ruptured a disk in her back.

They kept her overnight and referred me to a neurologist in Winston-Salem for possible surgery to remove the pressure of the disk material around the spinal chord. They said the surgery isn't financially feasible for a lot of people and could run $4500+ !! Everything they told me and everything I read said the surgery is most successful if done within 24 hrs so I picked her up the next morning and took her to Winston to have the surgery.

Had she been an older dog I might have had second thoughts but Hershey is only 4.5 yrs old and has a lot more love to give our family over the coming years.

For the first week after the surgery, she still couldn't move her legs very much. Then slowly each day she started making progress and now is able to walk unassisted for short periods. She's still on strict crate rest for the next two weeks but is progressing fantastically. It has been a difficult three weeks and between the emotions and taking care of a special needs dog, it has been a real workout (dog weighs 50 lbs!).

I never realized it but a ruptured disk is a pretty common genetic occurrence with long bodied/short legged dogs. Beagles, bassets, etc. Now I look back and regret every time I let her jump into and out of the boat/truck and some of the rough housing we've done over the years. Needless to say I won't be letting her doing anything too strenuous anymore.

If you have a long bodied dog with short legs be careful not to let them overexert themselves. Between the surgery and the emergency vet clinic I now have almost $4000 in this dog which was a bit cheaper than they quoted me. I'd do it again in a heartbeat. Hershey is my very best friend and an important part of our family.

Glad your hound is feelin better. Life aint the same without em. I got one limpin at the house now from over-exerting himself yesterday at the pool. Man they look pathetic when they aren't feelin well don't they???? I need to learn to sport that expression when I don't feel like doin somethin my wife asks of me!!!!!

Thanks man. That last pic was her at 2 months old right after we picked her up at the pound and her very first time in the boat! Or any boat for that matter! She LOVES the boat by the way.

I gotta hand it to you, Shane..you da MAN!!...not all would shell out 4 grand on a dog, but you stepped up when your friend needed it most..Hershey is as lucky to have you as you are to have her!!...you are right...many more good times ahead for you and her...

Sorry for your dog troubles.....got to hand it to you for puttin' up the cash for the young girl. At 4K plus I'd have been thinking long and hard about that one. being less than 5 years old though would probably push me that way too though. I do have to say though that is one "unique" looking, long bodied, short legged, long eared dog you got there.

The replies make me feel better about doing it. RB - I'll be glad to do that. Just let me know when you come come up with the additional 6k....no rush but before Christmas if possible. :sun:

I appreciate the replies fellas. Some kind words indeed. I admit we do spoil the heck out of her. I do the most. She is the first dog we've had aside from dogs I had growing up. I objected to getting a dog for several years after we had kids and the wife finally made me give in a few years back. All I can say is that dang dog has made our lives 10x more enjoyable. Had her for 4 years so that comes to $1000 per year. If you could convert enjoyment into cash I say we're still ahead of the curve by a long shot. Amazing how they steal your heart isn't it?

Good Job Bluerunner. The wifey and I have a beagle retriever mix, ( I call him a Wilmington Island Squirrel Hound) that has now blown out both his ACL tendons in his rear legs chasing squirrels out of the yard. Cost about a thousand per leg to fix, but he's worth it.

Don't worry about the money, the Big Man Upstairs is gonna take care of it for ya later on.

Update: She goes back in tomorrow for the 4 week checkup. She's still on crate rest but her frequent walks are now unassisted. She comes out a little wobbly from laying around, then once shes stretched out and gets around pretty dang good. No step climbing but other than that she is doing great.
