SKUNK smell that is. After starting vacation catching multiple red drum I suffered thru. 2 other trips after various prey without any luck even drug Airslot along for one of those trips (sorry Lance). *Have to head back to work Friday so after getting a call from my friend Carolyn looking for someone to fish with we decided to try for spades and then cobia as a plan B.
It was looking bleak early as the wreck we wanted to fish for spades at was already occupied so we ran over to the bridge tunnel to look around the islands for spades. *Didnt see any spades but I did spot some nice schools of black drum! *Wasnt really equiped for them but we quickly tied on some bucktails to a couple of our spadefish rods and begain sight casting to the drum. *I hooked up on my second cast and the fish came right to the boat before it decided it was hooked. It was the biggest black drum I have ever seen. Well over 100 pounds I would say. The fish ended up breaking me off before we could boat it. Oh well spadefish rod + black drum = broken line. *I hooked up 5 total all ate a green bucktail with a green twister tail, broke off a few more but one of the ones I landed was 48 1/2 inches which is big enough in Va. for a citation. 8) *These fish are tough to get to eat a jig so I was pleased with the success we had.
After we tormented the school of drum enough they vanished so we tried cobia fishing for awhile with no luck. Got A call from a friend who had put a few nice flounder in the boat live baiting at the bridge so we decided to try that for awhile. *We had some live spot & croaker we had brought for cobia that were a bit large for flounder baits but we decided to try anyway. Ended up catching a few nice flounder including a nice 27 inch 7 lb. 8 oz. fish for me (citation #2) *;D
Capped of the day by towing a guy in that had broke down while taking a couple out in his boat he was trying to sell them. ouch! * Glad to get the smell off me. Eating stuffed flounder tonight! *Sometimes when plan A & B fail, C and D work out. *I will take what I can get..
