If it is a charter boat, then I agree, a charter capt
would be able to tell the difference between a mako and a white.

Even so, I keep identifier charts in my V at all times,
since I am usually jsut a weekend fisherman.

I think I could tell the difference between these two:

Well I have caught a Maco, and there will be no mistaking the next one!! ;)

Well why did they have to do a DNA on it to find out what it was for sure??

I agree with MJ and the local perspective is that if the DNR had to send it out for a DNA test how in the hell do they expect the captain to know what it is??? does the DNR want us to start carrying DNA kits on our boats? :-/

DNA would be proof beyond a reasonable doubt if they decided to press charges...but Cy has a good point ;) ...it wouldn't hold water dockside, but might inna courtroom fulls eggheads

In north Carolina unfortunately each boat can keep one a day as long as they are 54 inches . Most guys after killing them take pictures , cut out the belly strips for bait and dump them overboard . They are not catch and release unless you cut them off at the hook which is easy to do once they have calmed down with a long wire cutter and even if gut hooked they will survive to fight again..I'll never understand that mentality and if you are bottom fishing you should expect to catch a lot of sharks .What a waste ...Frank

You should defently be able to distinguidh the diffence between a Mako and great white, its like a blue fish and a striper ::) Shame on the marina to for hanging that pup to >:(

sfprovyn, are sure about that ??? I was under the ipression that great whites are protected under fedral regulations as a endangered species? I could be wrong.

The only North Carolina exclusion are spiny and smooth dogfish. Most of the big sharks we get down here are Hammerheads and Sand tigers. It may be too warm for Great Whites...Frank

our bigguns are Hammerheads, Tigers , Makos and bulls. I have caught some big hammers since Katrina. They caught a big Mako off a PIER a couple months back.

The water up in the delta is so salty I have buddies catching bulls while catfishing up in the rivers down here right now. ::)

We get Baskins, Blue, Brown, Dog, and there have been a few Mako's and Great Whites in the past few years.

I caught my Mako 1995 10' long guesstament but the fish dealers 400 pounds.

But what we have now on the Cape is whats getting to be more then a huge Seal population!! They are taking over the outer Cape!
Shark guys say we are starting to see more sharks as they are attracted to the seals for food!

Thats OK by most fisherman cause the seals have ruined the beach fishing! And catching a striper then have it stolen by a lazy cow seal is more then a common thing now a days!
