Hey MJ, can you make this one a sticky?
Charleston SC get together on the weekend of March 18th.
Only reply with conformations, refer to the other thread for questions or links. Let me know if you are coming with your boat or not, how many expected to be in your party, whether or not you will need a slip for your boat(and how long), and if you need trailer parking. Post where you are staying so others may try to stay near. If you have any direct questions, feel free to call me (843) 532-9148, PM me, or email me at
[email protected]. Best recomendations to stay will be in Mt. Pleasant. Downtown Charelstons is nice, but more difficult to get around with a boat, also more expensive. N. Charletson is hit or miss, let me know if you want me to ride by a hotel and check it out for you. For cabin rentals, Isle Of Palms is the most exspensive, followed by Sullivans Island, Mt Pleasant, Folly Beach, and James Island.
Heres a map quest http://www.mapquest.com/maps?city=Charleston&state=SC
I live in Goose Creek, takes me about 20 minutes to get downtown. Summerville is nice, its a little further. If the wind is howling, we may run up the Cooper River to Moncks Corner
the place where we are going to have the oysters and Bar B Que( hey Reel, you see this) is going to be Sea Breeze Marina http://wikimapia.org/5370171/Seabreeze-Marina if you have any question about the Marina, direct them to me and I'll have the manager contact you. Its a dry stack, tehy normaly don't rent wet slips, but they're friends of mine, so we are getting a special deal. Plenty of resturants and sites to see. make sure to visit the SCDNR site http://www.dnr.sc.gov/ for rules, regulations, and requirements.
Looking forward to seeing ya'll. Now I need to get to work on my V

I know we are going.
I'll either have 2 or 4 people with me.
I will be bringing our 180 Wellcraft Center Console.
Not sure if i'll be trailering it, or driving it from MB.
Would need a hotel for lodging, but prefer to be very close to the marina most of us are staying at. (Can't be too far from the boat in a new place lol)
I can only iron out more details once it gets closer. Either way i'll see y'all down there

Spare, I did have the SNS at one time..was revoked by the governing bodies upon discovery of an evening of fun & frivolity w/a beautiful young lady from Buffalo... revocation was made permanent after finding out the nite in question happened above the Mason-Dixon...officially lost the stamp, but was unofficially patted on the back and received "Job Well Done" by the officiating staff after her appearance at the hearing on my behalf...:hide:

the choices are endless. Inshore you have spottail(redfish, red drum), speckled trout, flounder, and a ton of misc trash fish. We get some small blues inside as well. All you'll need for this is light inshore spinning reels, I use 7ft medium action 10 lbs rods Penn 4300 SS's, spooled with 25lb braid. Live bait under a float, or lead head jigs. Nothing fancy. If you want to venture outside, theres the endless undersize black sea bass, all at 11" for bottom fishing. I've heard the spades have been showing up earlier, don't know pesonally, you might have to run out further. Offshore should be on fire(Tuna, Dolphin, Wahoo), but its a bit far for a V to get to, figure a minimum run to 35 miles out, hottest spots are 72 miles out. If we run up the river, we'll be going from salt to fresh. Stripers are in the river, I don't know much about catching them though. Large mouth, catfish, crappie, brim, all the fresh water stuff. If we go into the lake, there are some monster catfish and plenty of stripers. Check out charlestonfishing.com for fishing updates, trends, and info. Make sure to check the SCDNR regulations for fishing liscense and limits. If we go up the river, you'll will need the fresh and saltwater liscense. I didn't want to be the "camp director" with the clip board and whistle, figured I'd just let every one do what they want and we'd meet up at the end of the day. If there is something that you'd be interested in doing, let me know. Do some research on line about all the sights to see around here. I'm lucky enough to live here, I can see them any time.
BTW, WIlly, If you come early enough, I have a pig hunt set up for you.

I'm happy doin either...depending on how long yer gonna be down, you could squeeze in some of both...

Reel, what you think about puttin in at "The Dock" in Monks Corner and running down on Friday for any one that shows up early, that leaves Sat for general ridin. If the weatehr is sucky on Sat, we can allways ride back up. I'll see what teh stripers are doing on the lake, I've got access to a pontoon on the lake if you want to try fishin the stripers.
I'm telling you guys, one weekend is not enough

I'm up for a cruising, drinking hanging out sight seeing thing or a mix. Don't bother me none, would love to just see what the area looks like from land and sea.
Mostly I'm coming down to meet up with you fellows and share some time together. I just need a break from working my arse off up here and 15 degree weather. If we wet a line inshore that will just be an extra in my mind.
I will have 12-13 hours to discuss it with Rob on the way down, I will be ready for anything, it's my nature.

Ok, finally took the time to firm up....Willy and I will be staying in my friends RV at Mount Pleasant KOA site.....looks about 6-7 miles out across the bridge from Charleston.....not sure if anyone is into camping but it also looks like they have small cabins and such. We'll be down there late Thursday night or early Friday morning...may spend Thursday night in Florence SC and then head down the extra couple hours on Friday morning.

marina doesn't have a ramp(they do but its hard to use on a boat teh size of a V), Remlys Point is right accross the harbor(In Mt. P), nice ramp with easy access.
BTW, the marina isn't set up for extended stays, they have planty of docks, but no shore power, they do ahev a few outlets and long extension cords if you need to keep a bettery hot
RidgeRunner
02-11-2011, 08:29 AM
RW- That or any number of Pelosi's comments on the loop would send em over the top. You might need a referee before you get there.
Story- I had an acquaintance that was a three way partner on a 25' Bayliner Flybridge. The three owners would get together every April and take the boat to Marathon for Dolphin fishing. One of the guys couldn't stand to be in the vehicle with the other two due to "political differences" so he would always ride in the cabin of the boat with a couple cases of Bud Light.(7 hours) He claimed it was the most relaxing time of the entire trip, I always assummed it was just the beer and head close-by. Kinda dangerous I guess, personally I wouldn't ride with any one of them.

OK, Vic!!...you are right up Coleman Blvd from a good ramp at Shem Creek!!..you can put in there and cross the harbor to the guys who put in downtown at the marina...but if Rob & Willy are gonna be in Mt Pleasant, I'd recommend putting in there as well...Shem Creek has several good restaurants(code word for cold beer) to pull the boat up to...Reds is one of 'em...I think one called Creekside there too...Shem Creek will be HOPPIN' and the "Puppies" will be out by then!!...(and I ain't talkin' about the 4-legged kind):beer:

If we have a place to congregate, I can bring the propane cookers and or the grill and do up some fish, low-country boil, chicken, steak, chops you name it. That ought to take some of the load off Spare so he can enjoy some time with the V20 crowd. Just a thought...

Great post, Spare!!...for those coming to Charleston, study these links for lots of useful info...
The Charleston Harbor link...ZOOM in on that chart to reveal Shem Creek location and channel...there are markers over there and genaerally you should follow that bank...cutting across behind crab bank should be Ok, particularly at higher tides...dead low, I would avoid it...following the bank will take you in the direction of the Intracoastal Waterway heading North....
Gonna be FUN, Guys!!...brang ya party hat!!...:sun:

Wish i had my v up and running we go to Charleston every year for spoleto but never been on the water.I will be in Columbus GA for an air show that weekend. Shem creek grill is good place to eat restaurant has a dock. If any one goes into town the saffron grill is excellent next to collage and inexpensive. Poogans porch on Queen st is also very good. also the hunley and magnolia plantation are worth seeing birds are nesting and camellias should be in bloom at magnolia and the hunley is amazing to see the technology from the war. you all have fun now.

I got home @ PM today,
Thanks Spare for a great time. I had fun boating, fishing and meeting your wonderful family.
Vic: your daughter is a real trooper, she helped launch and trailer your boat each day and she knew what to do. Good for her and you it shows your teaching your daughter something she will always know and probably use thru out her life. Way to go being a good dad.
I didn't get a pic with my camera of the "gift" we bestowed on his Majesty now known as "Willy Nation".
Seems to me Rob and Reel got pics of the ceremony so I hope to see them posted on here in a few days.
I also want to thank Captn Pete and his wife for letting me ride and fish with them in their pretty V20.
Michelle caught the first and largest of the 8 black drum we boated Saturday. All in all we had the 8 black drum and 2 Red Drum.
Captn Pete's boat caught the largest and most fish of the weekend so he holds that title until next year when my boat will be there.
There are plenty of story's, some we can share and some that won't get told, You guys will have to go to the next gathering so you know "the rest of the story".
BTW we discussed spreading the gathering around so we all have a chance to go visit different parts of the US. I think it's great idea.
Thanks again Spare you did a great job at putting this together.

We got home just before 10pm last night. We hit traffic for about 30 miles between Richmond VA and DC. Michele and I had such a good time we are already talking about how we want to do it again next year. It was great to meet everyone. we consider all you guys great friends of ours. Being the only wife there Michele said she never felt out of place and that she felt like she had known everyone for longer than just a few days.
Lee, It was my pleasure to have you on board our boat. I'm glad you did 'cause I'm still learning to fish and you hooked us up.
Ozzie, I will never forget metting you. I meant what I said about the extra V that I have. It wasn't the beer talking I promise.
Vic, You have such a sweet boat. It looks like it just rolled off the showroom floor. I could never tell it was an '83. I don't care how much it rattles I still love the way it sounds at idle. And like Lee said your daughter was a real trooper. None of my kids would have put up with this weekends activities.
Willy, It was great to finally meet you. I hope we can get together angain soon. Next round is on me!
Rob, sorry your boat was giving you some trouble this weekend. If you want I could take a look at it sometime. You need to PM me your address. I want to send you those speakers for taking care of our tab the other night.
Dave, Thanks for setting this all up. It was great meeting you and your family. We had the time of our lives. We can't wait to do it again.
BTW I already miss the SC weather. Right now at the lovely Jersey Shore its 38 degrees and raining. On wed. they are calling for a rain/snow mixture.:fight:

Special thanks to Spare for pulling us all together with the oysters and Reel for being our guide on land and sea. Never touched the camera all weekend but Reel did. Can't wait to see some pics.

Just got in around 9PM, Rob is on the way home to North Jersey. Rob is a great guy and I don't think he wore his Ipod once in the 28 hours we were on the road together.
He has a nice V20 and he graced me with some time behind the wheel which brought back great memories. Thats me at the helm in some of Ozzies pics.
South Carolina Low Country is beautiful and the weather was great for us.
Spent Sunday walking Old Charleston with Rob and my new good friend Steve, Rob's life long friend from Fla., did some shopping and stopped for a great lunch at Heimens and some cocktails at the Fleet Bar.
It was my great pleasure to meet all of you Snaggers and one Mrs. Snagger, Michelle who was a nice lady.
My good friend Ozzie was the classic gentleman as always and it is always a good time when he and I are downing Jameson's and spend time together, and by the way I am not the only one with Super Models in the family I am here to tell you.
Vic and his daughter Melissa were great and his V CC is sweet. His motor sounds like a cross between a Harley and a dragster, sweet.
There was a loose cannon running around, and I call him friend, Lee you my friend are a piece of work and I love ya man. And she did not like "Krinkle" I am telling you.
Dave thanks, I enjoyed finally talking with you face to face instead of the phone all the time. Your family is precious.
I learned a few things, I can now pop open oysters almost as fast as Lee, I know what makes a good oyster knife. I know that the really fabulous Grits are not the ones on a plate but they are walking around all over the place down there and they will take your breath away twice, once when you first see them and again when they speak with that sweet drawl.
I learned again the charm of the south runs deep and is wonderful. The people live a good life.
I learned that friends can come from a little time on a little black box and a screen. I wish my friends Franco and Skools and Blue Runner could have been there.
And that everyone of them i met from this site I can honestly say I look forward to seeing again.
Thanks all of you for a great time, its a privilege to know you.

All right Rob you hear that? I am ready
But in all honesty you don't need bikinis, per se, all you need is to sit at the middle small bar first floor in Red's and your heart will be fluttering all night, just make sure you have a view of the register the girls all use on the side of the bar.
