I'm new to the site. Congrads, great place to get pumped to keep working on a proyect. I,ve had my v20 since 2000 & realy learned to appretiate how great she is. Now that I found this site, the v20 is going to get the treatment of a 1965 gt350 mustang. Attached pics of my transom replacement & other mods I'm trying. Keep working on those v20,s.

Welcome....we have another member from Puerto Rico as well. JJTronics, although he is selling his V-20 it seems. Great work so far it looks like.

tnx RWilson. I've seen a handful of v20's & 18's on the island mostly on the west coast. Here are a couple more pic's.

Nice work. That was a v in need of a transom job in the worst way!

Wow guy! You went all out to clean that mess. I ended up drilling the wood out from between the skins. Didn't want to cut off anymore than I had to. Good work!!
Makes me want to smack the crap out of the "repair specialists" who thought some bathroom caulk would work.

Nipper & KEEPINGITREEL: Imagine the shock I got when I took the cap off & saw that mess. The last owner put the boat in a slip for 2 years (yes in the water) and the transom holes leaked into the core. When I was cleaning out the rotted wood I noticed it had started from the top to the bottom. The only advantage is that it was fairly easy to clean with a air chisel & grinder. Attached pics of the transom install. The first pic is a template I made to cut the 3 panels. Tnks for the good luck, need it.

The transom was raised to 25" and I used 3 - 3/4" marine grade panels sandwiched w/ glass. The final result is a transom so hard u can literally slam it with a giant sludge hammer as hard as you want & it won't move.

I first made the deck-pan piece form apart, then glassed it in the opening inside & out. I made the pan as shallow as possible to use like a platform to exit & aboard the boat easier.

The hull was leveled to later level the deck and make sure the drains work properly.

I spent dozens of hours applying mixes of cabosil with resin & body filler to make it straight & smooth.

Happy New Years to all.

After having to put the V20 to a side to fix some roof leaks & painting the home (have to keep the wife happy), I'm glad to resume the work on the V.

I'm going to install a anchor roller & rope pipe, but in a custom way. These pics show the mod & primer. Next, correct all the smaller flaws that appear by the hundreds after the primer.

Tnx Richie. At last final work. I decided to contract the texturing job to a friend of mine (to technical for me). He's going to use a special sprayer to shoot gelcoat, no sand needed. It should look like factory work (I hope). These pics are of the masking job. Later I'll post pics of the finished work.

I thought I saw a speck on that flawless white paint job - then I realized it was on my computer screen!

That's some gorgeous work, from the transom re-build to the non-slip deck finish. Really good idea raising the transom 5 inches. One of the only faults I've found with the V20s is a tendancy to sit a little lower in the stern than I'd like, especially the models with that huge hatch in the splashwell. Raising the transom 5 inches will provide a much peace of mind.

Kudos on a job well done.

Thanks for taking the time to document the whole ordeal too....I like the notch in the bow for the anchor roller. ....I missed that when you posted it a few weeks back. It looked so good i thought it was factory but I didnt think I ever saw that before so I had to go back and see your earlier posts about when you put it in.

Great work

Awesome looking work TSP!!! Where do you find the time to make all that happen, and not get any flak from the wife. My wife is super cool, and wants to be on the boat with me, but I think even she would get a little snippy with the hours you have into it.

Thanks a lot guys, happy to have your approval. About finding the time, if I calculate it by the hour, I'm spending aprox. 8 hours a week . This month it's been 1 year since I began the project (416 Hrs). About the wife, she loves the boat (and the kids too) and i painted the house for X-mas. Being patient helps a lot too and last but not least, having a site like this one for inspiration.

At last I'm on the last steps for the conclusion of this one. I need to shoot the blue paint and blend to the sides, sand and polish the paint & start drilling & rigging the V. I've purchased many goodies I'm crazy to see installed.

I'll keep you posted.

amazing repair with fiberglass. terrific repair job. fiberglass material itself has only one draw back! ITCHY even when you are properly dressed. or vented. i know most members favor outboards but you wont experience this situation with an i/o!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:fight:

Very true..

but then again, your boat won't SINK from a hole in a bellows with an outboard... Just sayin... :hide:

Now I'm thoroughly jealous...she looks great.....what type of paint system are you using? My boat is still under covers with ice and snow, but your pics are giving me the fever to uncover the boat early this season and get going. That color will stand out nicely. Great Job!

Thanks man. You people get me pumped to keep on finishing this V. The temp here has been in the low 80's, clean skies & no rain (sorry). Perfect for us shade tree aficionados.

The system is a 2 part urethane, using a good quality primer so it will stick to the gellcoat.

Excellent work TSP! They never looked that good brand new. Somebody said you wouldnt have to go through that with a I/O. NOT!!! Mine was completely rotted out when I got it. I had to replace the stringers and entire transom. I didn't have to paint the entire boat, just the transom and buffed out the rest. You've done an amazing job there. You've got alot to be proud of!!
 CHEERS!!
