First post on this site..glad to have found it since I am a very new owner of an 87 250 Sportsman. I traded it for a 20' CC, had it on the water once and loved the smooth ride and power. I have a lot of questions about this boat as it is my first W/A and it has the OMC Seadrive on it which I have heard horrible things about but it we shall see! One of my questions is, where is a good place to shop for hardtops (bimini would be second choice) for this boat. I am still deployed but will be back in a couple weeks so would have to look online for now. Any input would be appreciated. Many more questions to follow.....

It took my Country almost 30 years to thank me for my Nam service.. :cen: No one that serves should have to wait that long, so I thank everyone as I meet them. I thank God nightly for all we have, and I stand ever vigilant to defend it. Just be careful and come home safely.

Glad to have you on the site. Get home safe. Don't know of a source for hard tops, but for bimini tops, you cannot beat the prices from gmitopdesign.com out of Canada. Someone here on the site got one and really liked it.

Well Destroyer thank you very much for your service, I will come home as soon as I can! I have had enough fun.
Nipper thanks for the site, Ill give it a look. I do prefer a hardtop but can also see myself going with a bimini if the hardtop doesnt work out for some reason.

Welcome from another 250 owner. I almost bought a whole 'nother 250 just for the hardtop that it had on it. The boat was trashed but it had a really nice custom top on it but I had second thoughts since I tow mine all the time and it seemed like it would add a bunch of air drag.

I used to have a 1986 Sportsman 250 with a 225 Evinrude on a bracket. You will like the way the boat handles, the closed transom, and all the deck space. I also once had a 1985 Sportcraft center console with the SeaDrive. You will like the SeaDrive when it is working. It is just a plain old JohnRude outboard on a lifting bracket. Same powerhead and gearcase components. Getting engine parts will be easy when you need them, but getting parts for the bracket assembly will be challenging. When you get back, you should regularly troll ebay and craigslist and any local boat scrap yards looking for Sea Drive parts.
The Sea Drive is a great concept, but it was very poorly executed. Make sure you get inside and check the transom area near the cut-out for water intrusion. The sooner you fix it the less it will cost.
