today i changed my fuel water sepperator and put the new one on dry, I started the engine and it ran until the gas was used up in the line, the water sepperator was bone dry so i pumped the bulb but it would not fill the filter, my question is this
do i have to fill the filter up with gas when i put it on
i used to pump the bulb and it would fill it but not today what could it be, the bulb is only about 3 years old
and why wouldnt the bulb pull the fuel to fill the filter like it used to /

I always fill the filter when i change, also a 3 year old ball is probity on its way out if not already gone.
I had one almost 2 years old and junk! For $10 I change every year now as i don't want to have issues out on the water, been there done that!
Get a good one and ck in the store, it should suck your hand when pumped, I have had a few that are junk right in the box!

What MJ said, I've never been able to get it to prime without filling the bowl, then I disconnect from the engine, stick something in the ball valve & pump till it comes out without air, otherwise you risk the air getting to the engine right as you leave the ramp.

If anybody cares to chime in with the best brand of primer bulb I'm all ears. I know some are junk from seeing posts on here before. I just don't remember which was best. I believe mine needs replacing as well.

Use to be Merc had some good balls, but Evinrude (BRP) seems to be the best now for the money these days.
I just bought one from my local marina and it says it has twice the suction and is blue in color that says it stays soft even in cold weather. I will say this, no gas in the filter and 4 pumps I had gas!! Will see in the long run??
But I was also told that I no longer need a ball with a 4 stroke as they have a electric pump that does the work??

My buddy has a 150 4 stroke Yamaha less than 2 yrs old and it came with a primer bulb. One one occasion we put in and only made it 1/2 mile before the engine started acting up, cutting out, wheezing and such. Come to find out he did not prime the bulb before we took off. It seems he needs a bulb for his 4 banger. Who knows....
