Ive been outa work since Dec 31st after being laid off from my previous job of almost 32 years at International Paper in Franklin Va. After searching the job market for a good job, paying comparable wages and filling out hundreds of applications it came to an end yesterday! The first place I applied was Nucor Steel in Hertford N.C. Ive been going through the rather lenghty hiring process for almost 6 months and yesterday I got the call I've been waiting for. I start Monday as a shift mechanic. The pay and benefits are Great! I'll start on all days for the first couple of months then go to shift. They work 12hr shifts of 4 days on, off 4 days and 4 nights on and off 4 days. I think I'll like it. Only work half a year, more time for boating and fishing!!

Great news!

4 days off = awesome! I wish I could do that. They used to let us work 4 - 10's. I did it for a year or more and I loved it. Unfortunately they put a stop to it a few years ago.

Mucho congratulations C!!

Congratulations. I hope it is the last job you will ever have to look for. Those 12 hour days can be rough I am sure, but knowing you always have 4 days off coming soon would get me through it.

Thanks fellas! Its a big relief after waiting this long! I can't wait ta get started, and Lee PM me your friends name and Ill look him up. Oh, I've never been in the military. My dad was in WWII in the Navy on a sub in the Phillipines. I almost followed in his shoes but he talked me out of it. I still think I would have liked it though. Anyway I start Monday morning and I'll let you all know how it goes. Bradford, love the Gilligans Island theme, It was my favorite show growing up. Ive got all the shows on VHS tapes.

Well, I actually started at NUCOR Steel Hertford last Monday morning. Ive got another week of safety training and orientation. I really like it so far. I took an in depth tour yesterday and was amazed! To see the entire process of turning scrape steel into plate is absolutely unreal! I was like a kid in a candy store to say the least. All the employees are very informative, friendly and love their jobs. The pay and benefits are excellent. I feel like I've won the lottery! Oh Lee, I met Chris B. yesterday, nice guy! He is in production in the caster section where I'll be doing maintenance. Looking forward to working with him and all the rest.
