Took the boat down to have the water pump changed this week, they called and said the drive shaft is frozen to the crankshaft and they could not budge it, so I took a ride down there and they moved it about a 1/4 inch. So what he suggested he said for 75. I can get a used shaft and he cut the shaft with a sawzall and dropped the lower unit. He tried to remove the shaft with heat ,no go, finally he drilled and tapped the end of the shaft and 2 whacks with a slide hammer it pulled out........ Now it was so rusted and pitted to took out several splines on the crank. He said he could put back together with no guarantees or replace the crank w/ new crank bearings ,rings, drive shaft , waterpump ,reseal the lower unit, The compression on the cylinders was 131 to 134 all cylinders and a full year warranty, I'm in to him for 6 bills already for another 2400 for the rest ........Your opinions? 1983 150 Mercury that looks and runs like new

I'm somewhat in the same situation with a 1991 225 evinrude. I am going to attempt to remove mine this week. Would be interested to know what you decide on yours. Good luck with it...

if it only moved a 1/4 of an inch, i don't see how he got a sawzall to the shaft. the pump housing is 2 or 3 inches tall? how close are you to Big shrimpin? he usually has a coulpea 150 mercs laying around.......

Years back I had the same problem almost. The splines on the shaft were gone, so we took the splined end of the shaft and cut 1 edge off (where the splines were bad) and then welded the inside of the crank where the shaft fits in it. Then we ground it square and flat to match the shaft. we put it back together and I used that motor for the next 12yrs. I think it was a 100hp.

If it doesn't work out BS says he can get you all fixed up! He has a whole motor or he can sell you just a power head to replace yours.

Good Luck
