at the lodge last Tuesday night they said he is now in ICU and stable but needs jaw, face, and eye socket reconstruction surgery. They have now found this happened due to steering broke while on plane.

Is this someone who post here or just a fellow boater?

Terrible, hope he makes it out ok. Prayers sent.

I had a cable break on the lake 3 years ago while on a plane running 27 mph with 5 or 6 folks on board. The boat veered right - directly toward a wooden seawall but luckily did not hit it. The same thing could have happened to me.

just a fellow boater and a lodge brother of mine.

I just found it was hydraulic steering and that the hose burst at the fitting on the ram. he was planed out and running close to 50 plus they said.

As sad as this is, it could have gone really bad...impaled on the steering column doesn't sound just right though when you consider the set up of a hydraulic helm...
Anyway, good to hear your friend has a chance of recovery w/some serious mending along the way...
This just points out once again...when we trust our lives and saftey to things mechanical, we are at some level of risk...I ain't stoppin' though and I don't expect anybody else will either...
One thing, the author of that news article did a good job of structuring what happened...well written...sometimes you read a news description of an event and left wondering WTF?...
Happy boatin' guys...just keep on takin' care of your stuff...
