What to look for when you purchase?

I have been searching and think I might have found a potential project boat. I have decided that a V20 is the boat for me. Living in the Southeast part of NC I feel this boat was invented with me and my family in mind. I would just like to know areas to examine to ensure that I do get a boat that is repairable. I am a rookie, novice, no make that none whatso ever experience at repairing boats however I am very good with my hands and willing to take my time. Anyway here is the potential project I am considering:
1976 20' Wellcraft V20

welcome to the cult. i don't know your budget or what the project boat cost, but i would consider a later model. i would look for one in the mid 80's up. they have a 25" transom(no notch), self bailing, and a belly tank instead of saddle tanks. no matter which one you select, the transom is the weak spot to check, with the deck next. usually no matter what you select, somebody on here has faced it before.

Transom-- solid ,,no rot,push and pull up and down on the motor and look at the tansom for any flexing of the fiberglass

Stringers--No rot

Motor- Compression test,,all cycls. should be within 10% of eachother better yet hook the the motor up to a hose and start it

Deck-Solid on soft spots

Hull-- solid

VIN# --Check for maching # on title

wireing guages working is a pluse

Trailer--no heavey rust ,no dry rot on tires, good bearings, light no big deal

the best is a test ride (sea trial)

did you buy that boat in Morehead City at Send your Boat to College from Capt Wes Daniels yet. I started to buy it to part out it's ROUGH good luck you'll need it. what did you end up paying? I had Wes down to $350 on it if it's the same V20 he had 6 months ago.

I have a 1980's model (think 1983) with a rebuilt transom. Needs floor work. Has a Johnson 150 on it that runs, but needs seals in the lower unit. It's on an aluminum trailer. Pm me if you're interested. Beautiful lines on this boat. I'm planning on fixing her up as soon as possible. I have a dual console now too so this is my project boat. Would consider selling it.

Yes this is the V20 @ Moorehead City. I have not even went to look at it but I am glad you replied. From your comments I think this is way over my head. From the other comments I have received I think the '80's is the place to look. Thanks for all the info and I look forward to the help!!!!!!
