I'm a new Welcraft owner. I just purchased a 1979 V20 for a project. I'll be pulling the outboard off soon to work on the transom over winter. The outboard is a 1989 200HP Evinrude. Is this too much for this boat? Any thoughts are appreciated.

Thanks, I put the boat in the water today for the first time and was suprised at how much water came in on the splash well. I need to seal this compartment lid better. It is currently not sealed at all.

Brody, do you have 20" or 25" transom?

It is a 20" transom. There is a jack plate and long shaft outboard.

200hp max? I dunno if there is such a thing as too much horsepower:party:
Personally, I like a lot of power, so I think a 200 is just barely enough on my V20 center Console. But, there does come a point where you have too much weight on the back and the boat will ride poorly. I think a 4 stroke 200-250 would be too much, but I wouldn't think twice about a 225+ 2 stroke on mine. I think 235 is the max hp legally allowed. Just my opinion

my '79 has the plate on the console that says that the max hp is 200 so you are at the maximum

200 was the max back then because that was pretty much the biggest outboard of the day back then. The 200 EVINRUDE will be a fine match as it isn't a real heavy 200, but it sure isn't the lightest one either by any means.

I have a 97' carbed 150 Evinrude on my 76' cuddy and I would have to say it's a perfect match.
