What is the correct carb for this motor ? Mine have the 4 plastic carbs. I have posted to pros on screamandfly no one seem to know the answer. The reason for my question is when I brought the engine the previous owner give me a set of "spare" carbs. I now observe the ones on my engine is 1 3/8 throat size, my "spare" is 1 5/16. My curiosity is of course which is correct ?

They should be the larger ones for the 140, but there are ALOT of variations on them. How many screws are in the butterflies? What are the numbers on the metal plates screwed onto them.

I have three screws on the butterflies.
On the carbs 1 3/8 the numbers stamped is 397907 & 397908
On the 1 5/16 the numbers are 398395 & 398393
Thanks Ferm

These 2 carbs are for 86 to early 87 140's. So chances are the other 2 if they are larger must be a partial set of the 86 200XP carbs. In 86 and a few of the 87 200 XP high performance loopers they used a MASSIVE set of carbs. I take it they are almost a straight shot through the air passage through the center of em, if so that is them.

On the 1 5/16 the numbers are 398395 & 398393
Thanks Ferm
These 2 numbers are for an upper and lower 87 225, so chances are they are a mismatched set.

Sorry for the mix up Ferm
What I meant was on EACH set of carbs (total of 4 ) (1 3/8 bore size) numbers stamped is 397907 & 397908
The other set of 4 carbs bore size (1 5/16 ) numbers are 398395 & 398393

I understood what you were saying, the first two numbers are the port and starboard carbs for the 86-early 87 140 as they were jetted differently on each side. The second set of numbers are for a completely different set of carbs as the upper 4 carbs are one number on the 225's and the lowewr 2 are another number. If you have those 2 numbers both attatched to one throttle body, then they are most likely a pieced together set. Also some of the early 86-87 225's if they were short shafts got the 200XP carbs. I would stick to the smaller of the 2 sets which are most likely what should be on it. IIRC 120 carbs are 1 1/8", so 1 3/8" should be 140's.

the 120's and 140's have the same carbs only difference is the reed set and jets, a 120 has small throat reeds and the 140's use the same reeds as the upper 225's had. I've converted several 120's to 140's by changing the reeds carrier and reeds to 225 uppers plus rejet to 140 size jets.

Ferm,
So you are saying I need to install the "smaller of the 2 sets" which is the 1 5/16 ? Note I have the larger currently installed 1 3/8 just wanted to be sure. Thanks

I would leave the ones on it on there if it were me. I'll try and do some more digging later and see what it should have on it though. If it stops raining I'll go out and measure mine since my 140 has a set of 86-early 87 140 carbs on it with those numbers.

Ferm you are an freaking genus as always ! Hats off to you my friend..here is what I found on another post it matches everything I have, the Bozo of a mechanic installed these carbs on my engine last year I switched em back because I rebuild the original I thought I had a set of spares wrong !
Nice little detective work but it was worth it.
Thanks Guys

I wasn't able to measure those carbs before I left, and I am in NEBRASKA right now and going to WTOMING next so I'm not going to be able to measure em for awhile.
