I e-mailed him earlier today to get more details. I might take a shot if it sounds good. South Jersey is close enough for a day trip. I asked how the floor and transom were as well as compression on the motor. Any suggestions on what else to ask?

Okay he replied and said that the floor and transom are solid. No compression test but he had it running over the weekend and said it ran fine. Steering is good as well as trim & tilt (new). His feedback is 100% so I can bid with some confidence but not too soon. Have to play the ebay game! I'll post as this further develops.

DO NOT BID TILL YOU GO LOOK!!!!

There have been many boats that say they are perfect only to go to the dump after you bid!!

Tell the owner your coming to look,
ck the floor for soft spots
Grab motor and lift to see if there is any movement in the transome
run the motor, ask for a sea trial, do compression test yourself! Its easy, rent nfrom AZ for free or buy one for like $25, remove all plugs, screw in compression tester turn motor over , repeat for all cylinders.

All clinders should be with in 10% of each other

Exsample 100 100 105 105 100 110 good
100 100 110 105 110 85 bad

Does it have trailer? will it make it home??

DO NOT BIB ON EBAY TILL YOU GO LOOK!!

I've got this guys phone number and I am going to bring my mechanic friend with me before any money exchanges hands. Thanks for the heads up but fortunately for me I'm not as dumb as I look. ;D

I love my V now, but I bought mine off E-Bay and it was a nightmare, wrong title for trailer, boat title never transferred, had to track the old owner down. My definition of turn key was totally differnt of what he thought was turn key. The key did turn, but that was about it. :-/

He got back to me and will not do a sea trial. He said I am welcome to come look but no trial. I'd say that it's at least a 5 hour ride and now i'm not so sure it's worth the trip. Any advice? No sea trial, should this be an instant deal breaker?

what is his reason for no sea trial? I bought [actually traded my boat for the v-20] and did not sea trial. I am no mechanic ,but I've had boats most of my life so I'm not to much of a greenhorn either. I did the transom bounce, the rubber mallet sound check, the compression test and basically the overall cond. of the boat, you could tell it was properly cared for. I had a good feel about the p.o. as well, nice guy, who didn't know squat about boats, so he always had it serviced in the beginning of the season and the end of the season [w/ receipts to back it up] I wouldn't call it a deal breaker....proceed w/ caution and good luck

Thanks phester. No reason given for the no sea trial, just a stern "won't do that". My luck would seem to run more along the lines of hammers ebay experience rather than yours so I will proceed with much caution.

Think about how close the boat is to the water for a sea test? Or is it that it has become so much trouble to operate that the seller is not willing to show the boat on the water? It is a buyers market, if there is a problem wait and buy a boat with few issues!
