Any of you have any experience with Tohatsus? I have not seen any discussion about them, good or bad.

I haven't had much experiance with them. I do know that at one time, they built the majority of small engines(or at least power heads) for the main ouotboard manufactures 15 hp and below. They are also the oldest outboard manufacture in the world. From what I've seen, they are a little on the weak side, and like the otehr japanese outboards, they corrode in salt. They have some impresive newer engines, but I don't know any one that runs them, sells them, or works on them

I have a 40 HP on a 13 ft whaler that i bought new 4 or 5 years ago. it has electric start and power trim. i like it so far, but i am not as impressed as i thought i would be.i read a lot of great reviews and it always starts;but i think the old mariner 30 (yamaha) was as strong. the 30 was twin cyl & 1 carb, this is 3 cyl & 3 carb. they are easy to work on & i haven't had to buy any parts yet..
what hp are you looking at?

Not looking for an outboard. I saw them at the Boat show this past weekend and just wondered if they are any good. I think Tohatsu and Nissan outboards are the same.

its like Honda vs. hyundai they both will get you to work but one is more expensive and is built better.

Nissan bought Tohatsu outboards and put their decals on them to cover some of the small HP outboard market. Mercury also has used Tohatsu outboards to cover some small HP markets, but mercury adds stainless hardware and other goodies before they paint 'em black and add the decals.

Yamaha uses them also in the small hp range. If you check some of the apba smaller class boats, you'll see Tohatsu's and Yamaha's that are identical
