I had the boat us. for a few years, had no claims so can't give you any opinion on that, they were easy to deal with for info etc. and the price was decent. Never checked progressive

I've heard some horror stories about Progessive on another site (THT). I'm sure every company has some customers that feel unsatisfied so it should all be taken with a grain of salt I guess.

I currently have PROGRESSIVE on my boat. Haven't ever had to use them, but I was very happy with the price. I'm paying $218 a year for $50/100 liability and $50K property damage along with a $2500 towing reimbursement policy. That is the only drawback to the towing is you have to pay for it and then they will reimburse you up to your towing limit. Around here a $1500 tow is pretty cheap anymore to. BOATUS didn't want to insure me due to the age of my hull as they only wanted to write me a plan with everything on it. They quoted me $768 a year with so many exclusions it wasn't funny. Personally I would get PROGRESSIVE insurance and SEATOW for your towing if you can't afford the reimbursement policy. TOW BOAT US on most of there tows will only give you covered tows within 50 miles of where the boat is stationed, PROGRESSIVE covers me up to 75 nautical miles of the continental US, and SEATOW is said to have one with no towing limit for $175 a year.

Reel, I only have good to say about BoatUS, but I've never filed a claim. After the refit, I took out a stated value policy on the PD. Wanted to make certain I could get my investment back if the worst happened. Fortunately, it hasn't.

I have Progressive. I pay about $600 for the two boats. Have never filed a claim. I use my Boat U.S. membership for "unlimited" towing.

I just want to say thank you to Reel for starting this thread. It prompted me to review my policy and realize that $900 a year was a little crazy. Called up progressive and found out that they still had me in Miami, updated me to VA and dropped to $275ish. THANKS REEL!

Wow!!!...that'll be a nice little HIT in the wallet...you can spend it all on the boat!...

Reason I asked is my boat is insured w/same co as homeowners...got another quote on homeowners that saved $550, but new co won't cover 35 yr old boat...Boat US has offered lowest quote so far, Progressive 2nd best, so I'll be doin' SOMETHING soon and knew I'd get the straight scoop from you guys...PD, I's thinking about going w/the stated value plan...glad to hear you think it's a viable route...THANKS for all the feedback guys...

Reel, I have Progressive, havent had a claim but they are cheep, and each year you dont have a claim, your deductable goes down....mine is zero now.

Plus you can do the "agreed value" for your boat/motor/trailer so they dont come up when your boat sinks and give you $500 for the whole thing.

Careful with the "agreed value" if you don't have anything to back it up with, ie receipts, NADA, etc. they will re-evaluate what the "agreed" on.

That exchange was nothin, on some other boating sites I've been to, the guys talk so ugly to each other it is unbelievable. Thats why I always end up back here.

Now if you guys would learn RV's, I'd never have to go anywhere else......

Yep, every few years they want an appraisal.

Yep, every few years they want an appraisal.

How do you get an appraisal done that would be an "official" price that the insurance company would accept?

I believe the agreed value option means that you decide what you want it insured for(within reason) and that is the amount you are insuring. Actual cash value sucks because it is normall low market minus 20%.

Agreed Value

Agreed Value coverage pays the Rating Base (http://watercraft.progressive.com/boat-insurance-coverages-comprehensive-collision.aspx#ratingbase) if your boat is declared a total loss, regardless of the actual cash value (ACV) at the time of the loss. For partial losses, there is no depreciation, except on the following: batteries, sails, canvas/plastic coverings and outdrive units or outboard motors older than five years.
For boats two years old or newer, the sales receipt can serve as the Rating Base. If a sales receipt is unavailable, the Rating Base may be determined by referring to an ABOS, BUC or N.A.D.A. appraisal guide or an accredited marine survey.

So I guess a survey is required for older boats, or they go by NADA.

I sent them photos of the re-fit work, with receipts for it and the engine, and they wrote the policy for that amount. It's admittedly steeper, but I figured I had borrowed money (equity line) for all that work, and didn't want to risk loosing it all.

Couldn't agree more...does that stated value diminish over time?...
