Man, just put a piece of clear plexiglass on the back of that boat and you wouldn't need a fishfinder--you'd be able to see the fish under the water ;D ;D

That's funny Grace, but I agree. I'd be taking on waves in a calm day of flounder fishing.

you guys are all gay.
that boat is gorgeous.
slap a piece of starboard across the transom and off you go.
i'd take that over a V any day.

I think the wood on the floor in front of the motor folds up to block the waves from comming in.

Take a look at the scuppers in a full transom V20, they are way to small to shed any significant amount of water. Now take a look at a notched transom boat like the one shown above. If the notched transom boat takes a wave it can get up on plane and shed the water. Now take a full transom boat and try to shed the water through the scuppers :-/

Think Mulv could be right on the draining issue, but for me and the kids, I prefer a transom that is closed in.

That true but with a notched transom it only takes a one foot wave to swamp the boat and with full transom it takes three foot wave to swamp the boat.

The problem is'nt the first wave its the second wave that you have to worry about. If you cant shed the water weight from the first wave your are much more susceptible to the second wave.

Bigger scuppers are just a hole saw away!! ;)
There's got to be nothing like pounding through some 3-4 footers and turning to see your buddy/dog/wife/kid rolling down the deck towards the engine! :o :o :o

Guys I love full transom boats as well, but its really funny how everyone on here goes nuts over em all the time. Most on here are ready to set fire to all boats that have a notch. They have been making boats like the one above for a long time for a reason...when properly designed..IT WORKS. I have taken waves through my "piece of junk" notched transom boat several times and I just stand there and fish and it drains out. ::)
If its bad enough out there to SINK a boat due to a notched transom (which I don't think could happen BTW) then you shouldn't be out there in the first place IMO. :P
Like I said..."fullys" are nice, but not the Holy Grail to all that is boating. ::)
Comon guys, "notches" need luvin too. ;)
Nice boat CTT. 8)

I think that you guys are right in a sense, some boats with the notched transom like that are very sea worthy boats, get rid of water almost as fast as it could come in. We all saw that video of the guys in Hawaii playing in the monster waves with the transom like those.
And Mulv is also right that the scuppers in the V20-21 is too small to do the job right if water does get over the wall.
So what is the answer I don't know for sure but my experience has been that for 99 percent of the fishing that I have seen anyone doing the full transom is the way to go and the best of both worlds would be to make scupper about four times the size of what is on our V's. That would be the foshizzle.
For those times you got giant waves swamping the cockpit repeatedly the full notch would be great if it is like the one pictured, but if you have the notch transom with the non-movable knee wall you will have the same problem as a full transom boat without the benefit of the protection it serves.
If the wide open transom (like the one CTT posted) is not over heavy in the stern and rides high with good buoyancy then it would actually be the best overall in a rough sea but would likely be a wet boat for that 99 percent fishing, especially if you fish a lot of rips, inlets etc.
You'll notice most well built small fishing boats(commercial type) have very large scuppers or are open all around with railing, same thing with well built sail boats, 6-12 inch scuppers in the cockpits. Any size wave that comes in just runs out. They also have several inch step over at the bulkheads going forward or down a cuddy or pilot house. Not a inch or two like our V's.
But you will also notice those people also are dressed in high rubber boots and slicks or pants most of the time.
For the majority of the fishing we would ever do with the V's the full transom is probably the best overall with the notch transom/knee wall close behind it.
If you like making long runs off shore with a small boat the open version transom is probably best if the sh!t hits the fan which you will be more at risk of encountering.

well, it seems the voice of reason comes from a man who at certain times of the day, you might find hanging from a tree on his neighbors quad, wearing his wifes panties.

Beautiful boats, the second one withthe twin 200+ HP four strokes may be on the edge of what I was talking about. That is a lot of extra weight in the stern. In any kind of chop that cockpit is going to be wet, if your drifting etc.
I'll tell you what, take that first one sell the FICHT's and put twin 150-175 ETECs on there and it would go into the relm of a HOLY CRAP
