Well, I start a new job tomorrow morning. Same company , but now I'll be the first new millwright moved or hired into Mech. Maintenance in 10 years. I was hired in 1978 to the Union Camp company Swamp Logging crew and started as a chain saw oper. for 3.90 an hour. I worked my way up to skidder driver then to fellerbuncher operator. I cut trees 14 years, did most all maintenance to the tractors and saws. In 1997 they shut the logging job down and I got in at the Paper mill as a spare to Maintenance Dept.In 1998 International Paper bought out Union Camp Corp. Jan 1st 2000 I took a permenant spot in the Sheet Converting dept as a Direct Loader , loading finished product into trucks or stacking in the warehouse.Iv had a transfer request in for Maint. about 10 years. Tomorrow I finally get my chance to shine.

Working your way up from teh bottom is the best way.
Good for you.

Congratulations. I saw a program on Discovery channel about swamp logging, and that is some serious work. Glad you survived that and are moving on to bigger and better things (and more money to buy more toys)!

Thanks guys! Its been a long hard road gettin here but I think it will all be worth the ride. First day went OK. It seems I've been working my up to this all my life. I loved logging, was tuff sometimes but I really enjoyed it. Swamp logging is extremely challenging. My last tractor was a 726 Tigercat with a 24in saw head and 60in wide tires all around. That thing would go anywhere! It was like driving a monster truck all day long. I watched a show the other nite called Extreme Logging and it really carried me back. I miss logging but the pay sucked. Now I've gotta go out and buy a whole new set of tools for work. We have to furnish our own tools.

Well, the first week went very well! Worked overtime 2 days, but I'm working with some really great guys. Everybody's been very helpful and supportive. I went out and bought a new set of tools Saturday. We get a 200 dollar tool allowance every year so I'll be hittin the Sears store often. I love gettin new tools! I think I've made a good move. I could'nt be happier!
