My daughter comes up from the basement and says something died down there??

I go down there and someone knocked the plug to the freezer out, and about 50 pounds of Fluke, 25 Pounds of Tuna steaks, and a 20 pound Turkey all melted in this blood bath at the bottom of the freezer!!!:cen::cry:

We got everything all cleaned up, but now there is no fish for the winter!!! It could have been worse as in a year when I fish the whole season I would have triple that much fish saved!!

Wow going to be a long winter with no fish to eat :cry::cry:

No it wasn't the cat, I am guessing that the plug fell out from its own weight. It plugs in up at the ceiling, I was going to go down tghere and staple it up and forgot. So I guess it was my bad :cen:

The turkey is what made the real mess, as all fish was vac sealed.

I lost about 25 pints of scallops a couple of years ago. broke my heart. i thought about inventing a defrost alarm, like a smoke alarm, that is battery powered. if the internal temp gets above 25*, a loud horn sounds. i know some freezers have them, but they are powered by the plug, so in you case no good.

sorry for you loss

Oh man MJ, what a bummer. I bet that was a nasty mess to clean up. Freezer may be shot too. I had a refrigerator once that after we lost power, I just could not get the rotten smell out of it. I think it permeated the insulation and I had to junk the frig.

Well I used like a gallon of bleach to clean it, and it has been left open. All smell is gone this morning when I went down there. I don't need the freezer any more :bat: right now so I will wait a week or so before i plug it in and see what happens?
I tell you I was close to duct taping it and throwing the hole thing away!! But I am to cheap for that.

I lost our freezer about 3 weeks ago, but caught it before most of it melted. I know the feeling though as we had just slaughtered a steer a few years back and lightning got our deep freezer. We didn't catch it for 2 weeks though:cen:! We keep the freezer in the workshop which is seperated from all of the houses. We noticed the flies before we caught it.

well I thought the smell was gone, but after going out for a few hours and coming home I could smell it still, Not real bad but it was there. I may end up getting rid of it?? we shall see.
I am getting a freezer alarm for both freezers this week.

I will look into it thanks.

It be a shame to get rid of it as it was a fridge we got brand new 10 years ago, and it is better then the one in my house!

Good thing my wife can't get in the basement, if she saw how clean I got that thing she be having me do this one also!!:cen:

You might replace the outlet - a new one would probably grab the plug a lot better. If it's that loose there's probably not a great connection - could cause a hot spot (start a fire) or cause resistance (lower than full voltage - bad for the motor).

I lost a freezer full when the GFCI tripped without me knowing it for a few days - if you got one of those, I'd sure try to not use that circuit for the freezer.

If you can't get the smell out, my wife's got some stuff that gets dog s**t smell out real well - if you need it, email me and I'll ask her what it is.

Sorry man that really does stink.

I used some tie straps to hold the plug in on mine because it kept falling out. Also do not use a circuit with an ARC FAULT interrupter as an electric motor can pop them as well. Unfortunately these new ARC FAULT breakers are mandatory in FLORIDA for new home construction for 09+:bat:.

Phatdaddy referred to OdoBan. It is pretty good stuff. It comes in a concentrate, and a little bit goes a long way.

Try putting a bunch of newspaper and charcoal in the freezer and change it every day for a few days to see if it will absorb the odor.

MJ,

The stuff I was thinking of is Nature's Miracle and can be found at pet stores. It's an enzyme and it cleans the cat box so well you can stick your nose right close to it and smell nothing.

Pat had a couple more suggestions:

OxiClean Laundry is an oxygen bleach (different enzyme than the pet stuff) - spray it on and close up to keep it wet and let it sit. She says it's very good stuff.

Amonia - put it in an open pan in the freezer and close it up to let the fumes work.

They make a little gizmo that grabs the plug and then screws into the plate w/the plate's center screw...I know too late for that load, but maybe save next year's stash...

Bad Kitty!!!:you:
